Air Asia having established themselves as the biggest player in the cheap flights market in Asia are readying for an assault on the Australian market by firstly opening up routes between Australia and Malaysia.
The founder and CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, has signalled his company’s intention to challenge Jetstar, who dominates the cheap flights to Asia market, through his off-shoot company Air AsiaX.
The network of destinations AirAsia operates cheap flights on gives them a key advantage as passengers can fly from Australia via Malaysia and then on to many destinations throughout Asia for extremely cheap prices.
AirAsia are now offering cheap flights at various prices from Australia starting at $285.
AirAsiaX plans to keep costs as low as possible by not flying from any of the major airports either in Australia or Asia – instead using bases such as Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne’s Avalon airport where landing fees are extremely low.
AirAsiaX is currently operating flights between the Gold Coast and Malaysia’s low cost Kuala Lumpur airports, however, they are planning to extend their range of Australian destinations over the coming months.
The competition between the airline and Jetstar is expected to heat up as the competition for international passengers and the lowest marquee price becomes important. Jetstar, Virgin Blue and two other Asian-based cheap flights operators, Tiger Airways and Viva Macau, are also expected to add to the competition.
